The Irish artist’s life spans almost an entire century, but her name will always be linked with the birth of modern design. Eileen Gray was one of the pioneers. She was the only woman in the circle of the brilliant new designers Mies van der Rohe, Le Courbusier and Marcel Breuer. She may even have been ‘the most talented of our generation’, as René Herbst would later say. When we think of Eileen Gray, we think first of all of her fantastic creations in interior design. In the 1920s she was among the first to astonish the public with furniture made of tubular steel, which amounted to a revolution back then. Today, her designs are classics.
